School Law

Preg O'Donnell & Gillett's School Law Practice began over 20 years ago. The Practice Group is comprised of Mark O'Donnell, Christine Tavares, Emma Gillespie (formally Owings), and Shannon McMinimee.

The firm has handled over 350 school liability cases and represented over 50 Washington school districts. We have defended districts and their employees from lawsuits involving:

  • wrongful death,
  • quadriplegia,
  • assault,
  • sexual grooming and abuse,
  • harassment,
  • athletic injuries,
  • premises liability,
  • injuries occurring during school-sponsored activities,
  • bus accidents,
  • negligent hiring, training or supervision,
  • property damage,
  • employment,
  • construction cases,
  • civil rights, and
  • Section 1983-based claims.

Case values have ranged to more than 10 million dollars and have been filed in State Courts, Federal District Courts, and the Court of Appeals.

Shannon McMinimee recently joined the firm and brought with her several years of experience as Assistant General Counsel with Seattle School District. This has provided Shannon with experience and expertise in special education law and general school law, and she has handled virtually every issue encountered by school districts in their day-to-day business of educating students.

Preg O'Donnell & Gillett's knowledge of the intricacies of school law and its sensitivity to the practical needs and concerns of the school administrators has created an excellent relationship between educational professionals and our firm, allowing us to bring value and service to districts of all sizes.
